NEVADA CITY, Calif. July 13, 2019 – Due to an ongoing search and rescue operation, the South Yuba River State Park’s Highway 49 parking lot, the old 49’er bridge and adjacent trails are closed to the public at this time. The closure is expected to last through Sunday at least.

An adult is missing after reportedly helping rescue a child near the 49’er bridge on the South Yuba river early this evening. A 911 call stating four people were in need of assistance launched an immediate response from State Parks, Nevada County Consolidated, North San Juan Fire and Grass Valley/Nevada City Fire departments.

Once on scene, emergency personnel determined two people were in need of rescue. The child was safely recovered from the river, but one adult remains unaccounted for. Nevada County Sheriff’s Search and Rescue team is now in charge of the incident.

Matt Green, the Sector Superintendent for State Parks, is asking for the public’s cooperation. The SAR and emergency services equipment will remain on site overnight and search efforts are ongoing.

Please refrain from accessing the area and use extreme caution if you recreate on the river. Water temperatures are still very low and the river is running higher than usual. Hypothermia sets in quickly! Please wear a life vest at all times.
