Penn Valley, CA — Bird enthusiasts, nature lovers, and families are invited to join a guided spring bird walk at South Yuba River State Park on Sunday, May 17, 2026, from 8:00 a.m. to 10:00 a.m.

Hosted by Sierra Foothills Audubon Society, California State Parks, and Sierra Gold Parks Foundation, the walk will explore the scenic Bridgeport area along the Yuba River during peak spring migration season.
The outing will be led by experienced birder Jean Matsuno and will begin at the tiny Kneebone Cemetery just before the Bridgeport Visitors Center on Pleasant Valley Road in Penn Valley. Participants will follow Kentucky Creek to the Yuba River, pass the Visitors Center, and cross the historic Bridgeport Covered Bridge while searching for a variety of bird species.
Possible sightings include Black-headed Grosbeak, Bullock’s Oriole, Yellow-breasted Chat, Yellow Warbler, and the always-popular American Dipper.

“This is a wonderful opportunity to experience the beauty of the Yuba River corridor while learning about the birds that depend on this habitat during spring,” organizers said.
The walk is open to birders of all experience levels. Participants are encouraged to bring binoculars, water, bug spray, and weather-appropriate shoes and clothing.
Parking is available along the shoulder north of the meeting location.
