Grass Valley, CA – In recognition of Women’s History Month, North Star House invites the community to an engaging afternoon lecture with historian Mary-Jo Wainwright titled “Reluctant Reformers: Mary Hallock Foote & Julia Morgan in the Progressive Era.”

The talk will explore the roles of women in United States history during the Progressive Era (1895–1930). It will examine the challenges historians face when integrating women into the broader national narrative, explore the goals and impact of the Progressive Movement, and highlight how Mary Hallock Foote and Julia Morgan, two women whose legacies are tied to the North Star House, fit within this important period of social change.

Julia Morgan, the first licensed female architect in California, designed the North Star House in 1905, while Mary Hallock Foote, a noted writer and illustrator of the American West, lived in the home while her husband served as manager of the North Star Mine. Together, their stories connect national history with the unique cultural legacy of the North Star property and the Grass Valley community.
