Nevada City, Calif. – The Nevada County Youth Commission secured its first win by gaining free fares for Youth ages 6 – 17. The youth free fare program goes into effect on Nov. 1.
No passes or identification are necessary.
On Sept. 17, Nevada County Transit Services, in partnership with the Youth Commission, presented recommendations for free fares for youth. The Transit Services Commission of Western Nevada County unanimously approved the proposal and commended the commission for its advocacy efforts. Representing the commission was Youth Commission Chair Graham Gardemeyer.
“It was awesome,” Gardemeyer said about the victory. “They were open to our comments, and they were grateful for the work we did.”

The proposal for youth free fares was part of the first-ever recommendations the commission presented to the Board of Supervisors in June. The commissioners said many young people needed the free fares to increase access to the bus system and because they lack transportation to recreational opportunities.
“This is an inspiring example of young people shaping solutions for our community,” said County Executive Officer Alison Lehman. “Their leadership shows the power of civic engagement, and we are proud of supporting this initiative.”
