Aug. 15, 2019 – Iowa Rep. Steve King defended his party’s anti-abortion stance by claiming humanity would not exist without rape and incest. It was a desperate attempt to justify his abortion ban bill, which did not include exceptions for rape or incest. The measure failed to pass in Congress despite GOP support. Rep. King has shown that he has no respect for the trauma of sexual assault survivors and is an avowed rape apologist.
Statement from Alexis McGill Johnson, Acting President and CEO, Planned Parenthood Action Fund:
“Rep. Steve King’s statement is disgusting and reprehensible. He’s laid bare his party’s anti-abortion platform — one devoid of compassion. King’s policies have always been rooted in racism and misogyny, and this statement shows anti-abortion politicians will stop at nothing to push their ideological agenda on all Americans. Survivors of sexual assault should be heard and believed — full stop. Americans deserve better from our elected leaders.”
- “U.S. Rep. Steve King told the Westside Conservative Club on Wednesday that humanity might not exist if not for rape and incest throughout human history.”
- “’What if we went back through all the family trees and just pulled those people out that were products of rape and incest? Would there be any population of the world left if we did that?’ he said at the Westside Conservative Club in Urbandale, Iowa.”
- “‘Considering all the wars and all the rapes and pillages taken place and whatever happened to culture after society? I know I can’t certify that I’m not a part of a product of that.’”
- “The Kiron Republican was discussing his defense of not allowing exceptions for rape and incest in the anti-abortion legislation he tried to pass in Congress.”
