AnimalSave, in partnership with the Center for Animal Protection and Education (CAPE) and Sammie’s Friends, is working to expand the number of low-cost spay and neuter appointments available to the Nevada County community. As a result, AnimalSave will be offering additional spay and neuter appointments through July, August, and September 2024, or until the current funding is exhausted.

AnimalSave’s Low-Cost Spay/Neuter clinic began operating in March of 2008 and has altered over 30,000 animals.
Pet overpopulation is a serious problem. Each year, millions of healthy, adoptable dogs and cats go to animal shelters and animal rescue organizations across America. Shelters and rescues are struggling with the overwhelming number of unwanted companion animals. Many of the animals who end up in shelters lose their lives because there are not enough loving homes for them.
The critical shortage of veterinarians and veterinary support staff has made providing low-cost spay/neuter services more difficult. The increase in cost for veterinary staff, surgical and medical supplies and other costs associated with running a surgical facility for animals has made funding AnimalSave’s low-cost clinic more challenging. This has resulted in fewer surgery days being offered, longer wait times and an increase in homeless dogs and cats in our community.
Education about responsible pet ownership, the cost of having an animal and the importance of early spay/neuter is essential if we want to impact the overpopulation problem. Spaying dogs and cats at an early age (8 weeks and certainly before 4 months of age when they can start reproducing) will drastically reduce the number of animals entering local shelters and rescues. In addition, early spaying and neutering can help avoid certain health issues and reduce unwanted behaviors.
Additional funding for AnimalSave’s low-cost spay/neuter clinic is needed in order to cover the expenses for increased surgery days. The Nevada County Spay & Neuter Coalition came together for this purpose.
