Human Resources Director Steve Rose was honored at Tuesday’s Board of Supervisors meeting with the International City/County Management Association’s Veterans Recognition Award.

Rose, a retired Air Force officer who served in the military 25 years, has been one of the association’s most active members in terms of recruiting veterans and sharing information about the Veterans Local Government Management Fellowship.
“Steve exemplifies the principle of service above self, a trait defined in his military service,” said Pat Martel, the West Coast director for the association. Martel, who drove from Napa to present Rose with the award, praised Rose for creating opportunities for veterans in Nevada County. He is only one of three recipients of the award to date.
Since joining Nevada County in 2018, Rose has been a strong advocate for veterans, assisting over 50 service members in transitioning into civilian life.
“I appreciate the award and recognition,” said Rose, who was not told in advance about the honor. “I’m inspired to work in a great county that allows me to offer this service.” Rose has served on ICMA’s Veterans Advisory Committee for three years, during which he has regularly shared his programs with cities and counties nationwide. He also served on a task force to advise the Ukranian government on how to support returning war veterans.
County Executive Officer Alison Lehman praised Rose for helping veterans and implementing programs for the county to support a dynamic work force. “You personify good government,” added Board of Supervisors Chair Hardy Bullock.
