Nevada City, Calif. – The City of Nevada City invites community members to attend a public meeting to review and discuss a proposed Short-Term Rental (STR) Ordinance that may be considered for placement on the November 2026 ballot.

The meeting will be held:

Tuesday, June 30, 2026

5:00 p.m. – 6:00 p.m.

Nevada City Council Chambers

317 Broad Street, Nevada City

Over the past several years, the City has engaged residents, property owners, business owners, neighborhood representatives, and other stakeholders in an ongoing conversation about the role of short-term rentals in Nevada City. Through workshops, committee meetings, City Council discussions, and public feedback, community members have helped shape a proposed ordinance intended to balance neighborhood quality of life, housing considerations, tourism, property rights, and local economic vitality.

The current short-term rental regulations were adopted by the voters and cannot be amended directly by the City Council. As a result, any proposed changes would require voter approval. The City is currently considering placing a measure on the November 3, 2026 ballot that would repeal the existing ordinance and replace it with a new framework for regulating short-term rentals.

The June 30 meeting is intended to provide the community with an opportunity to review the latest draft ordinance, hear a presentation on its key provisions, ask questions, and provide feedback before the ordinance is considered by the City Council for potential placement on the ballot.

Topics addressed in the proposed ordinance include:

  • Regulations for hosted and vacation rentals
  • Permit eligibility and renewal requirements
  • Neighborhood compatibility standards
  • Parking, noise, safety, and operational requirements
  • Protections for housing stock and local neighborhoods
  • Administration and enforcement provisions

All interested community members are encouraged to attend. Whether you have participated in previous discussions or are learning about the proposal for the first time, your input is important as the City continues this community conversation.

About the Process

Since 2024, the City has hosted multiple public workshops and meetings regarding short-term rentals. The proposed ordinance reflects feedback received from residents, stakeholders, the Economic & Community Development Committee, and the City Council, and is intended to provide voters with an opportunity to determine the future of short-term rental regulations in Nevada City.
