You are registered to vote and you have checked to be sure your registration is up to date (https://www.sos.ca.gov/elections). You’ve received your ballot, you sit down at the kitchen table, ballpoint pen in hand, to start marking up that ballot. It’s decision time. The problem is that you have no idea how to vote on some of the propositions – and who can blame you since they are as clear as mud – and you haven’t been following the candidates.
Don’t put that ballpoint down! Some of these decisions may not be easy, and it takes some effort to figure out how you want to vote, but The League of Women Voters of Nevada County is here to help. We have extensive information on our website at www.lwvnevadacounty.org and a considerable list of non-partisan resources you can depend upon. Find the list at https://bit.ly/4eVHN13.
We have videos on all 10 of the state propositions and video replays of our candidate forums, plus more presented by other groups. You’ll find links to our online voter guide VOTE411, information about how to register, options for how and where to vote, information for voters with disabilities, resources about disinformation and misinformation, and more. And because we don’t always agree with one another when it comes to our politics, we have a list of organizations devoted to healing the divisiveness in our country, with resources to help us have civil conversations and healthy disagreements. We add to this list regularly, so send possible additions to president@lwvnevadacounty.org.
We urge you to help get out the vote in any way you can. Share our resource list and other information you find useful with your circle of friends and family. Get together with a few people to discuss the ins and outs of the propositions. Come join us over the next few weekends to hold signs on freeway overpasses and on strategic street corners that say one non-partisan word: VOTE. To sign up, go to https://bit.ly/3XPTAXi
Each and every vote matters on so many levels. A non-vote is a vote by default. And if this sounds like a broken record, then the League of Women Voters of Nevada County is doing its job.
This is a no-excuses election, Nevada County. You have all the information you need at your fingertips, now it’s time for all of us to exercise our right, privilege, and responsibility as an American to VOTE.
Lynn Forbes is co-president of the League of Women Voters of Nevada County, a nonpartisan, grassroots, non-profit organization.
