Nevada County, California – December 10, 2024 – Beginning Monday, December 16, WM will deliver green carts to customers without organics containers as part of the new food waste collection service starting in the new year. Customers with existing green carts will receive stickers and educational materials to help with sorting and reducing contamination.

Organics residential toter

This service will introduce current WM customers to a three-cart sorting system for trash (black lid), recyclables (blue lid), and organics (green lid)– which will include food scraps, food-soiled paper, and yard trimmings (except treated wood and invasive weeds).

Curbside organics collection will occur weekly starting January 6, 2025. Customers who don’t subscribe to WM services will still be required to separate materials and transport them to the McCourtney Road Transfer Station or another permitted facility, as required by California law. Residents who bring their carts to a neighborhood collection site, also known as a community stop, will have the option to subscribe to this service depending on space availability.

While home composting remains encouraged, curbside food waste collection expands the community’s ability to repurpose items that might not be suitable for backyard composting. As the service rolls out, WM encourages customers to create a WM account or download the My WM app to stay informed and manage their services online.

The new food waste collection service is enabled by the recent completion of the McCourtney Road Transfer Station Renovation Project. It aligns with California’s SB 1383 regulation to divert organic waste from landfills and reduce emissions of short-lived climate pollutants, supporting the state’s broader environmental goals.
