The Osher Lifelong Learning (OLLI) Orchestra, Nevada County’s Community Orchestra, will host its spring 2025 concert in the Stone Hall located in the Miner’s Foundry Cultural Center in Nevada City on May 7, 2025 at 7:00 PM.

The concert will feature a variety of pieces by nineteenth-century European composers.  These include:

  • Symphonie Number 1 in D Major by Charles Gounod (1818 – 1893)
  • Romance pour Flute (Opus 37) by Camille Saint-Saens (1835 – 1921)
  • Pavane pour Une Infante Défunte by Maurice Ravel (1875 – 1937)
  • The Czech Suite (Opus 39) by Antonín Dvorák (1841 – 1904)

OLLI Orchestra, Nevada County’s Community Orchestra, was formed in 1978. The Osher Lifelong Learning Institute—OLLI—granted funds to the orchestra in 2005, which stabilized funding, rehearsal and performance spaces, and a modest grant for a conductor. Musicians pay tuition and volunteer their time to rehearse and perform for the community.

OLLI 2025

The Romance pour Flute by Camille Saint-Saens will feature Nevada City flutist George Husaruk. Originally from West Germany and raised in Montreal, Canada, George studied flute at the Royal Conservatory of Music at McGill University with renowned flutist and recorder teacher Marion Deschenes. When his family moved to Los Angeles in 1960 he continued his studies on the flute with, among others, George Drexler, principal flutist at the LA Philharmonic and Jean-Pierre Rampal. In the mid-60’s, while at UCLA, he joined a rock n’ roll band and began listening to jazz guitarist Wes Montgomery. George has performed with many jazz musicians including Cal Tjader, the Chuck van Horn Quartet, The Dave Sexton Quintet, Zzah, Chris Amberger, and Barbara Curtis. Since moving to Nevada County in 2020, George became the Artistic Director/Conductor of The Grass Valley Male Voice Choir and currently performs with several groups: two rock bands, the OLLI Orchestra, the Nevada County Concert Band, “Wildlilly,” a local Americana duo, and “Spirit Rising,” the church band at Nevada City United Methodist Church. His music is available on YouTube, Spotify, Amazon, and Pandora, listed under his name or take1jazz.  We are grateful to have him as lead flutist in the OLLI orchestra and for his performance this evening!
