North San Juan Fire Protection District is hiring a new Fire Chief. Jason Flores, the current Chief, is stepping down from the leadership position after a long tenure and the district board is actively recruiting right now.
Acting Fire Chief Tom Browning explains: “Chief Flores was handling the operations for the fire district and Chief Browning was handling the administrative requirements for the district. While both individuals will continue to serve our organization, it is the Board’s desire to hire a Chief to oversee the general operations and administration and is available to remain in District during fire season.”
The district covers 87 square miles, roughly all the land between the South and Middle Yuba river from Bridgeport to Malakoff Diggins. They cover the largest territory with the smallest budget of all fire districts in Nevada County, according to their website.

Position Overview:
We are seeking a qualified, community-minded individual to serve as Fire Chief for our small, rural fire department. This is a part-time, non-PERS position estimated at approximately 8 hours per week, with additional attendance at meetings as necessary.
Key Responsibilities:
- Oversee administration and management of the fire district in coordination with volunteer and paid-call staff
- Provide leadership in planning, organization, and direction of fire protection and emergency response services
- Attend board and community meetings as needed
- Ensure compliance with all local, state, and federal fire regulations
Minimum Qualifications:
- Demonstrated experience in local government administration and management
- Background in fire service, emergency response, or related field
- Strong leadership, communication, and organizational skills
- Familiarity with the unique needs and operations of small, rural fire departments
