NEVADA CITY, CA – Just in time for Valentine’s Day, Sierra Theatre Company is staging a Theater by the Book production of Harold Pinter’s The Lover, the Nobel Prize-winning playwright’s darkly comedic examination of intimacy, role play, and the masks we wear even with those closest to us. Part of Sierra Theatre Company’s Theater by the Book series, the show will be performed as a staged reading, one night only on Wednesday, February 11.

Written in 1963, The Lover explores a seemingly conventional suburban marriage that conceals an unconventional arrangement, blurring the lines between domestic routine and erotic fantasy. It asks the audience the same question it poses to its characters: Does anyone—even the couple—truly know what is happening inside a relationship?
The production features Hunter Reed as Richard and Katie King as Sarah, a married couple whose afternoon “arrangements” challenge our assumptions about fidelity, desire, and the games people play behind closed doors.
“Pinter’s work demands attention to every word, every silence,” said director Michele Nesbit. “Which is why our Theatre by the Book staged reading format is perfect for this piece. It strips away everything but the essential—two performers, Pinter’s language, and the electric tension he creates. It’s intimate, unsettling, and utterly compelling.”
