NEVADA CITY, Calif. — Looking to bring inspiration to your next book club meeting? Nevada County Library is introducing new Book Club Kits designed to make hosting a book discussion easier.

Each kit checks out for 60 days and includes six copies of a selected title, a discussion guide, a checkout sheet and pen, and bookmarks for members.

“Our goal with these kits is to put together all the pieces someone would need to host a book club meeting,” said Brittany Blake, adult programming coordinator at the Grass Valley Library. “Maybe your group needs a fresh spark of inspiration, or maybe it is your first time hosting a book club and you are not quite sure where to start. These kits can help.”

Nevada County Reads–Inspired Kits

The collection debuts with seven unique kits, including two that connect to this year’s Nevada County Reads program.

Book club hosts can check out the kit featuring Daniel Mason’s North Woods and read the novel ahead of his author talk on Saturday, April 11, at Sierra College.

A second “tasting” kit offers the opportunity to explore a variety of books about California history.

“Book tastings” allow participants to share highlights from their chosen titles and discover new books through conversation. For the Nevada County Reads kit, book club members can choose from two novels, two histories, a collection of essays and a collection of poetry, then discuss the connections they find between their selections.

“Even though one person is reading a novel and another is reading a poetry collection, you can have a wonderful discussion of how all of this history is connected, which ties into how North Woods presents so many stories tied together by the land,” Blake said.

The kit also includes a copy of Exploring Nevada County in case book clubs are inspired to plan a local field trip, Blake added.

Additional Book Club Kit Titles

Other titles in the first round of Book Club Kits include Our Share of Night, Our Missing Hearts, The Buried Giant, The Marriage Portrait and The Heaven and Earth Grocery Store.

Holds can be placed by searching “Book Club Kit” in the library’s online catalog or by calling a local branch.
