(July 14, 2026) – Sierra Nevada Memorial Hospital (SNMH) today announced a significant advancement in patient care with the acquisition of the state-of-the-art da Vinci Xi Robotic Surgical System. This advanced technology expands the hospital’s capabilities in minimally invasive surgery, offering patients greater precision, shorter recovery times, and improved outcomes. The da Vinci Xi System represents the fourth generation of robotic surgical platforms and is widely considered the most advanced and versatile system available. The da Vinci Xi System represents the fourth generation of robotic surgical platforms and is widely considered the most advanced and versatile system available. It empowers specially trained surgeons at SNMH to perform complex procedures with enhanced ergonomics, vision, dexterity, precision, and control compared to traditional open or even conventional laparoscopic surgery. The Xi system provides an immersive, magnified 3D view of the surgical site, offering surgeons clarity and depth perception. Procedures are performed through small incisions, typically ½ to 1 inch in length, reducing trauma to the body. Patients often experience less pain, less blood loss, lower risk of infection, reduced scarring, and a quicker return to normal activities.

The launch of the surgical robotics program is made possible through community donations at Sierra Nevada Memorial Hospital Foundation (SNMHF). “Having a robust surgical program that keeps people close to home for their care helps fulfill the mission of the Foundation,” said Sandra Barrington, Executive Director of SNMHF. “Without community donations, this vital technology would not be coming to our Hospital. The healthcare economy is very challenging, and we are blessed to have a generous donor family that is investing in technology to keep care local.”
Last week the hospital opened its doors to the community to provide the opportunity for a public demonstration using a sample machine. Curious community members and SNMH team were able to test drive the machine, interact with representatives from the system and ask questions about its impact. A special physician demonstration was also provided.
SNMH has invested in extensive training for its surgical teams, including surgeons, nurses, and technicians, to ensure the safe and effective utilization of the da Vinci Xi System. Patients eligible for robotic-assisted surgery will be thoroughly evaluated and informed about the benefits and potential risks by their physician.
