The Nevada County Superintendent of Schools (NCSOS) proudly hosted its annual Exploring Careers in Health Institute during Fall Break, October 12–15, 2026. The four-day immersive program provided 20 high school students from across the county with hands-on experience and direct mentorship in the healthcare field.

Sponsored by NCSOS, the institute was created to inspire students interested in medical and health careers while strengthening vital connections between local education and community healthcare providers. Thanks to the support of key partners—Sierra Nevada Memorial Hospital, the Sierra College Nursing Program, Grass Valley Fire Department Station #2 and local Nevada County First Responders—participants engaged in department tours, career mentorship, and clinical skills training.

Throughout the week, students explored core departments at Sierra Nevada Memorial Hospital, including the Cancer Center, Surgery, Cardiology, and Labor & Delivery. They gained insights into hospital chaplaincy and physical therapy, participated in a “Lunch with Doctors” Q&A session, and earned certifications in CPR and First Aid.

At Sierra College’s Rocklin campus, students met with leadership to discuss post-secondary educational pathways, licensing requirements, and career opportunities in modern healthcare. In the Nursing Simulation Lab, participants put learning into action—taking vital signs, practicing wound care, learning about medication administration, and inserting nasogastric tubes on simulation manikins.

On the final day, students connected with local firefighters and EMTs in Grass Valley to explore emergency medical services (EMS) careers. During a tour of the fire station, students witnessed real-time call responses, gaining a firsthand look at the fast-paced nature of emergency response.

To round out the experience, participants completed a final capstone project showcasing a healthcare pathway that inspired them. During a closing ceremony, students presented their projects to family, friends, and Nevada County Superintendent of Schools John Baggett, who presented them with program completion and CPR certificates.

“Seeing our students step directly into clinical simulation labs and fire stations—working side-by-side with local practitioners—is truly inspiring,” said John Baggett, Nevada County Superintendent of Schools. “This institute gives young people an authentic taste of what it means to serve our community through healthcare. We are deeply grateful to our local partners for opening their doors and showing our students that a rewarding career in medicine starts right here in Nevada County.”

NCSOS extends its sincere gratitude to the dedicated partners who made this program possible:

  • Sandra M. Barrington, Executive Director, Sierra Nevada Memorial Hospital Foundation
  • Nancy James, Dean of Nursing and Allied Health Sciences, Sierra College
  • Katie Davis, RN, Nursing Simulation Lab Coordinator, Sierra College
  • Valarie Carte, Instructional Assistant, Sierra College Public Safety Program (Fire Tech & Administration of Justice)

Through immersive learning and direct industry engagement, the Exploring Careers in Health Institute reinforces NCSOS’s dedication to preparing students for high-demand, high-impact careers—bridging classroom education with real-world practice.
