Grass Valley, CA — The chess pieces will be moving again at Magnolia Intermediate School this fall as young chess players from across Nevada County and surrounding communities gather for the Gold Country Scholastic Chess – Fall Tournament on Saturday, October 3, 2026.
The tournament comes on the heels of a highly successful event at Magnolia in March, when 65 students gathered to compete, learn, and share their enthusiasm for the game. The strong turnout highlighted the growing popularity of scholastic chess in the region and the increasing demand for opportunities where young players can compete against others from outside their own schools.
The October 3 tournament will offer students of all experience levels the opportunity to test their skills in a friendly, competitive setting. For newer players, it will be a chance to experience tournament chess and meet other students who are discovering the game. More experienced players will have the opportunity to challenge themselves against a broader field of competitors.
Beyond competition, chess provides students with an opportunity to develop skills that can serve them well both in and out of the classroom, including strategic thinking, problem-solving, concentration, patience, decision-making, and sportsmanship.
“It was wonderful to see so many students come together for our last tournament, and we’re excited to welcome them back to Magnolia,” said Superintendent Gregg Motarjeme. “The enthusiasm these students have for chess is inspiring, and we’re proud to support an event that gives them a chance to pursue something they enjoy, challenge themselves, and connect with other students from throughout the region.”
The tournament is part of a growing effort to expand scholastic chess opportunities throughout the Gold Country region and give more students the chance to participate in organized competition.
