AUBURN, Calif. Placer County youth are bringing skateboarding and tobacco prevention together at a community event on Saturday, Oct. 24, from 12 to 4 p.m. at the Auburn Skatepark, adjacent  to Overlook Park. Skaters are encouraged to register now on the event website.

Hosted by the Placer County Youth Tobacco Advocacy Group, the skateboard competition is the groupโ€™s first event. The goal is to bring young people together for a fun afternoon while sharing information about the dangers of tobacco, vaping and nicotine products.

The event also wants to challenge the idea that all skateboarders smoke or vape. Along with the competition, participants can test their knowledge with tobacco trivia and use a vape disposal jar to safely dispose of unwanted vaping devices.

Prizes include $100 gift cards to a local skate shop and a custom skate deck. Youth under 18 need parent or guardian permission.

The event kicks off Red Ribbon Week, a national effort to encourage young people to live healthy, drug-free lives.

The Placer County Youth Tobacco Advocacy Group brings together young people from across Placer County who want to make a difference in their communities. Members work to reduce the influence of the tobacco industry on local youth, raise awareness of tobacco-related issues and support policies that protect young people from the harms of tobacco and nicotine products.
