Now that Nevada Countyโs annual secured property tax bills have been mailed, property owners may have questions about the information and charges shown on their bill. Assessor Rolf Kleinhans and Treasurer-Tax Collector Michelle Bodley, along with their teams, are sharing useful information to help property owners understand their property tax bill.

Whatโs on the Tax Bill?
The Treasurer-Tax Collectorโs website includes a marked-up example of a secured property tax bill. The guide highlights and explains key information, including:
- The propertyโs assessed value
- Tax rates
- Total taxes due
- Special assessments and direct charges
- Installment payment amounts
- Payment due dates.
One of the most important items on the tax bill is the assessed value of the property. The Assessorโs Office establishes assessed values in accordance with California property tax law. The Auditor-Controller then uses the assessed value and applicable tax rates to calculate the property taxes due.
The tax bill may also include special assessments and direct charges. These are separate from the propertyโs assessed value and are imposed by local agencies or special districts to fund specific services, programs, or improvements.
Property owners are encouraged to review their tax bill carefully each year. The marked-up guide can help explain the information shown on the bill and provide a better understanding of how the total amount due is calculated.
The marked-up example is available on the TreasurerโTax Collectorโs website: How to Read Your Secured Property Tax Bill.
