SAN FRANCISCO, Calif. Sept. 20, 2018 — Gov. Brown yesterday signed legislation into law implementing the final pieces of a deal to close the last nuclear power reactors in California at Diablo Canyon
In response to the new law, Damon Moglen, Senior Strategic Advisor at Friends of the Earth, issued the following statement:
This settlement, and the legislation just passed, amount to a green yardstick against which future nuclear reactor closures will be compared. With this agreement, we have shown that nuclear power can and should be replaced with clean, safe, cost-competitive, renewable energy, energy efficiency and energy storage.
This agreement also proves that just transitions are possible as part of these closures—we can and should do right by the workers and communities as we strive to protect the environment and address catastrophic climate change. This is yet another step toward making California a global leader in fighting climate change.
Friends of the Earth fights to protect our environment and create a healthy and just world. We speak truth to power and expose those who endanger people and the planet.
