Garden, Sequoia NF. IMT 2 (Zombro). Eleven miles southwest of Lake Isabella, CA. Brush and tall grass. Moderate fire behavior with wind-driven runs, short-range spotting and flanking. Structures threatened. Road closures in effect.Garden, 1/2 mile West of Democrat Fire Station on the Kern River Ranger District, Sequoia National Forest.

Highway 178 reopened to all traffic as of 7 pm on August 1, 2017. However, please drive slowly, as crews continue to work actively in the area.

Firefighters continue to contend with high temperatures, erratic winds, and steep, rugged terrain, necessitating a cautious and methodical approach to line construction. In addition to ground operations, aerial bucket drops continue on the fire. Today’s efforts will focus on direct and indirect line construction, utilizing air assets to slow fire spread.

Anticipating the potential for growth in size or complexity, Southern California Interagency Incident Management Team 2 assumed control of the fire as of August 1, 2017, at 6 pm, with Kelly Zombro as Incident Commander.

Highway 178 is scheduled to re-open today, August 1st, from 12 p.m. to 6 p.m. WITH law enforcement escort. Fire and road conditions will be continually assessed and road conditions could change.

Alternate routes should be considered before traveling into the fire area. The Kern River is closed on National Forest Land below Delonegha recreation area.

Hot and dry weather with gusty winds. High expected to be 99-104 degrees and a low of 7-13% relative humidity. Ridge winds expected to be 7-11mph and gusts in the afternoon.

Resources on scene include 7 helicopters, 11 hand crews, 11 engines, 2 water tenders, and 2 dozers. Personnel from the Bureau of Land Management, California Office of Emergency Services, CHP, Edison, PG&E, Caltrans and Kern County Fire Department are assisting the U.S. Forest Service in fire suppression activities.

The cause of the Garden Fire is under investigation.

On scene: One type 1 hand crew, several type 2 hand crews, helicopters, Air Attack including lead planes and air tankers, water tenders, type 1 and 3 engines.

HWY 178 is closed from the mouth of the canyon in Bakersfield to Democrat Fire Station where old Kern Canyon Road begins alternate routes must be taken until further notice from CHP.

The Kern River is closed to recreation starting at Delonegha Bridge down to Bakersfield.

Day and Night shifts will be worked until further notice.
