According to CAL FIRE PIO Mary Eldridge, the fire was caused by welding operations on a tractor in dry grass.

The fire is now fully contained at 10 acres. Mop-up operations are ongoing.

Some resources are being released back to their units. Mop-up operations have started. Firefighters are extinguishing hotspots, patrol for any spots outside the fire line and are starting to backhaul equipment – all while reinforcing the existing lines. Expect firefighters to be on scene overnight and possibly tomorrow.

Fire is now estimated at 10-12 acres and 80% containment. The reduction in acreage is due to better mapping.

Line construction is proceeding according to plan. Structure protection is still in place for the Buck Mountain area, but the fire activity has subsided a lot. Additional engines from out of the area have arrived and are covering the Higgins, Consolidated, Grass Valley and Cal Fire stations currently on the fire.

Air Attack reports great progress with the retardant lines. Solid line from the head of the fire down to the left flank. Tankers are back at Grass Valley Air Attack Base on a “load and hold.” They are available to return to the fire at any time.

Tankers are cooling the head of the fire with retardant drops, slowing the progression towards the structures while firefighters on the ground are providing structure protection and building lines.
