According to CAL FIRE PIO Mary Eldridge, the fire was caused by welding operations on a tractor in dry grass.

The fire is now fully contained at 10 acres. Mop-up operations are ongoing.

Some resources are being released back to their units. Mop-up operations have started. Firefighters are extinguishing hotspots, patrol for any spots outside the fire line and are starting to backhaul equipment – all while reinforcing the existing lines. Expect firefighters to be on scene overnight and possibly tomorrow.

Fire is now estimated at 10-12 acres and 80% containment. The reduction in acreage is due to better mapping.

Firefighters have made great progress and are starting to reinforce existing lines. Air Attack 230 remains over the fire to check for any spots outside the lines.

One civilian is being transported with burn injuries via air ambulance to the UC Davis Burn Center.

Line construction is proceeding according to plan. Structure protection is still in place for the Buck Mountain area, but the fire activity has subsided a lot. Additional engines from out of the area have arrived and are covering the Higgins, Consolidated, Grass Valley and Cal Fire stations currently on the fire.

Air Attack reports great progress with the retardant lines. Solid line from the head of the fire down to the left flank. Tankers are back at Grass Valley Air Attack Base on a “load and hold.” They are available to return to the fire at any time.

Tankers are cooling the head of the fire with retardant drops, slowing the progression towards the structures while firefighters on the ground are providing structure protection and building lines.

IC reports the fire at approximately 15 acres now. Good progress at the heel of the fire. The fire is burning at a slow rate of spread, except for the left flank where some moderate spread occurs. Structure protection in place for the Buck Mountain community.
