Derbec, Malakoff area north of Nevada City. Burning in heavy timber at the northernmost edge of the State Park near Derbec Spring and Camp Ross Relles.

Cause of the fire appears to be an escaped debris burn, according to personnel returning from the scene.

Firefighters are removing large hazard trees on the fire perimeter and continue to build and reinforce the hand line. There is no change in acreage and no further growth is expected.

Firefighters are making progress building a hand line around the fire. No update on size, but still a very low growth potential.

Three CAL FIRE engines, one local engine, two crews and one water tender are on scene. Timber faller en route to remove several large trees to create a safer access to the fire. There are no road closures or evacuations.

The fire was reported as several small spots in very steep and inaccessible terrain. Firefighters have a wetline around the fire but need to fall several large trees to make direct access to the fire. The potential for spread is low.
At the last report, the fire was approximately 1/4 acre in size, burning at a slow rate of spread. Smoke may be seen from the San Juan Ridge and Nevada City areas.
The cause of the fire is under investigation.
