Final update from the Tahoe National Forest:

The 20 acre Golden Fire is now 90% contained with 100% containment expected to be reached tomorrow 5.22.22. Cause of fire is under investigation. No structures were lost. Location is approx. 2 miles, SW of Camptonville, CA. This will be the final update.

The Golden Fire Incident Commander- TNF Camptonville Engine Captain 331 Matt Mullins reported that fire crews actively mopped up throughout the day, and mitigated hazard trees along Highway 49. Containment lines are secure after interior heat that could pose a threat to containment has been extinguished. One Hotshot crew, two Forest Service engines, and one Forest Service water tender will return tomorrow morning to extinguish any remaining interior heat to bring containment to 100%. Hwy 49 has reopened as of 8pm tonight 5.21.22.

In addition to thanking all the brave firefighting personnel on the ground and in the air, who effectively caught the Golden Fire at 20 acres in steep terrain, with dry fuels, under fire weather conditions, we want to recognize and extend our gratitude to the Tahoe National Forest Dispatch team, at the Grass Valley Interagency Emergency Communication Center. They patiently fielded over one hundred phone calls within the first few hours of the incident, ordered aircraft and all the resources on the fire and staffed all night to support the needs of the fire resources working overnight on the fireline. Their work is essential to coordinating and enabling a successful fire response.

The best way the public can thank all fire personnel from every agency is to stay informed of predicted weather conditions and take precautions to avoid sparking a wildfire. Ensuring your property has defensible space and home hardening can increase a home’s survivability and provide a safer environment for firefighters to engage a wildfire in the Wildland Urban Interface (WUI). It’s imperative to create an evacuation plan with Go-bags, sign up for emergency alerts for your county, and evacuate early to be prepared and enhance personal safety when wildfire ignites.
