Washington, D.C. January 25, 2019 – This afternoon, President Trump announced he will relent on weeks of demands for a border wall and sign Congressional Democrats’ clean three-week government funding bill, bringing an end to a record 35-day government shutdown that endangered nearly 800,000 federal workers’ livelihoods.
The following is a statement from Martin Hayden, Vice-President of Policy and Legislation, Earthjustice:
“Federal workers and their families should never have had to suffer the consequences of President Trump’s shutdown. It was clear from day one that the American people and their representatives in Congress would not hand billions of taxpayer dollars to the White House to build a hateful, destructive border wall, and it only became clearer with each passing day of this sad episode. We thank Speaker Pelosi and Leader Schumer for standing firm. We must all continue to hold the line against the President’s demands and prevent this kind of destructive, haphazard political maneuver from hurting the American people and our environment again.”
