Tarah Demant: Trump Administration Attacks Vital Healthcare in New Rule

Feb. 22, 2019 – Reacting to reports of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services “domestic gag rule” draft around Title X, the nation’s program for affordable birth control and reproductive health care, Tarah Demant, Director of the Gender, Sexuality, and Identity Program at Amnesty International USA stated:

This rule will be deadly. It will restrict reproductive and sexual rights, putting the lives of all people at significant risk, especially women of color and low-income women who are under-insured or uninsured.

It is clearly aimed at specific reproductive health institutions, like Planned Parenthood, that provide care to over four million people in the United States who have come to rely on it for both their basic sexual and reproductive health and health education. This policy not only targets these institutions but the doctors working to ensure all people can access basic reproductive health care.

The cruelty of this decision cannot be overstated. This politicization of sexual and reproductive rights unnecessarily puts the human right to health and the lives of all those in need of healthcare at risk.

Trump’s decision will essentially eradicate access to basic health care for the poorest in America.
