Fireline personnel continue to work in steep terrain with difficult access and continue to be hampered by high temperatures and very dry fuels. Heat related illnesses continue to be a priority concern for fireline personnel. Minimal threat expected. No critical resource needs at this time.

Nevada County Relief Fund Seeks Donations for Jones Fire Survivors. With only 35% of the Jones Fire contained and evacuated residents just now returning to their homes, the Nevada County Relief Fund is requesting donations to provide emergency relief to wildfire survivors. According to CAL FIRE, at least 14 residences were lost in the fire, while several residential structures on the Woolman at Sierra Friends Center are currently uninhabitable. Damage assessments are ongoing.

Until further notice, a District Superintendent Order is in effect, closing all parking areas within South Yuba State Park, including the parking lots at the HWY 49 crossing, Independence Trail and Bridgeport. This includes all State Park’s lands, west of Highway 49, south of the South Yuba River, including Jones Bar Road. Restrooms will remain open.

Overnight progress has containment now at 35%. The fire behavior overnight was minimal.

The demobilization of excess resources is ongoing. Firefighters continue suppression repairs and rehabilitation of dozer lines is starting.

Hwy 49 has reopened to traffic between Newtown Road and Tyler Foote. Please use extreme caution in the area and watch for firefighter equipment in the area.

Nevada City School District: Nevada City School District schools Deer Creek and Seven Hills will be open Friday, August 21, 2020 for the P.M. “B” Cohort and Distance Education students. We will be checking air quality in the morning to determine if we need to limit outdoor activities. Bus route 20 will not be running due to road closures.

Crews continue to work on dozer lines in the North and East. Completion of the dozer line in 12 hours. The North east edge of the fire is critical to stop forward progress. Crews will continue to complete hose lays to build and strengthen existing control lines.

Facts and stats: 96,000 gallons of retardant were pumped on the first day of the fire and 75,000 gallons on the second day. That is more retardant than the Grass Valley Air Attack Base (GVAAB) pumped in all of 2019 and second only to the Robbers Fire.

Nevada County OES update:

CAL FIRE Nevada-Yuba-Placer Unit is reporting 705 acres and 5% containment Wednesday evening. There are currently 854 residents under a mandatory Evacuation Order due to the Jones Fire with another 1,153 residents under an Evacuation Warning. Several areas to the south of the fire that were previously under evacuation orders are now downgraded to an evacuation warning only.
It is important to remember that while some mandatory evacuation orders have been lifted, many orders are still in place. Please respect the orders and remain safe.

Yesterday afternoon, NID became aware that fire retardant dropped on the nearby Jones fire was also released into one of its canals that delivers water to its Lake Wildwood Treatment Plant. Fortunately, NID crews were able to close the intake from the canal hours ahead of the impacted water reaching the plant. More here.

Tanker 89 and Air Attack are over the fire. As the heat increases, so will fire activity. The burn out operation conducted last night along Hwy 49 took away the fuel for the fire to run up the canyon side and spread eastward.

Overnight, firefighters made good progress securing the heel of the fire. A slopover near the fire’s point of origin remained within the dozer lines. Today, active weather with the prolonged, excessive heatwave will continue. There is a chance of scattered thunderstorms with dry lightning again.

An update from Sierra Nevada Memorial Hospital: “Dignity Health Sierra Nevada Memorial Hospital can confirm we received an evacuation advisory yesterday afternoon from the Nevada County Office of Emergency Services (OES) due to the Jones Fire. The care and safety of our patients and employees is our top priority and we are working closely with the County OES and other public safety agencies to ensure we are ready to evacuate in a safe and organized manner. The hospital has evacuation plans in place for such an event. We are fully prepared and equipped to comply with orders without compromising the care and safety of patients and employees. We will share more information as it becomes available.”

At tonight’s briefing, CAL FIRE’s Division Chief Jim Mathias laid out the events of the day. The fire, which was around 20 acres this morning, is now estimated at 340 acres. A map will be available tomorrow morning. Throughout the night, firefighters will continue to construct handlines, provide structure protection and 5 dozers will continue to build containment lines.

Weather should be warm overnight, with a slight chance of thunderstorms according to the NWS. At this time, no change in evacuations is expected unless conditions worsen dramatically.

According to the Nevada County Sheriff’s Office, 4,000 people are under mandatory evacuations and another 12,000 are under an evacuation advisory.

Hwy 49 will remain closed throughout the day tomorrow to facilitate firefighters and equipment access. Newtown Road will also remain closed.

Damage assessment is ongoing.

Nevada County Sheriff’s Office and their partner agencies will patrol the evacuation areas overnight. 50 officers are assigned to check roads, closures and evacuation zones.

Tomorrow morning, 21 engines, 3 handcrews, 5 dozers ans multiple aircraft will be assigned to the fire. Nevada County Consolidated Fire is providing 5 of the 21 engines.

The Northern Sierra Air Quality Management District and the Nevada County Public Health Department are issuing a joint Air Quality Health Advisory to notify the public of the possibility of poor air quality conditions through at least August 20, 2020 resulting from numerous wildfires, including the Jones Fire. Air quality is expected to vary greatly throughout the advisory period depending on fire behavior and weather conditions, with smoke settling in low areas at night.
