November 27, 2017 – As always, the Regional Forester received many more nominations in the “Partner of the Year” category than in any other category.  In fact, the Regional Forester Team decided to split the category this year to make the stiff competition more fair.  Drumroll please!

The 2017 Region 5 Partner Organization of the Year is…

South Yuba River Citizens League!

SYRCL works hand in hand with the Tahoe National Forest, modeling how partners are essential to the Forest Service in accomplishing our mission. They raise outside funds for restoration (over $1.7 million in 4 years), interface with the public and stakeholders on the agency’s behalf, bring new visitors to the national forest, provide scientific expertise, and even add skilled staff to complement the Tahoe’s where needed.

The 2017 Region 5 Partner Individual of the Year is…

Emilyn Sheffield, Professor at Cal State University, Chico!

Dr. Sheffield is an enduring leader in connecting the urban public with America’s public lands. The Field School she created at CSU Chico sends students out to work with public land managers and recreation departments to expose them to possible careers. Recently, she has worked closely with the Mendocino National Forest to establish a forest-campus stewardship program, changing the lives of her students and strengthening the Forest Service with new employees and volunteers.

Congratulations to the winners and to all the nominees!  Region 5 is honored to have such dedicated partners and employees.  The awards ceremony will be held December 13 in Sacramento.
