The Nevada City Film Festival proudly presents Movies Under the Pines (MUTP) — an unforgettable outdoor cinema experience for the entire family at the scenic Pioneer Park bandshell in Nevada City.
This year, enjoy the beloved 80s classic BIG (1988) on the largest outdoor screen in Nevada County — a towering 32 feet of pure cinematic magic!
Before the film begins, come early and soak in the summer vibes with:
- Lawn games and a life-size floor piano (just like in the movie)
- A variety of delicious food vendors including Chelo’s Street Tacos, Graze charcuterie boards, ice cream, and of course, popcorn, and concessions
- Local beer and wine
- Fortune tellers and surprise activities to delight all ages
BIG, starring Tom Hanks, is the heartwarming story of Josh Baskin — a young boy whose wish to be grown-up magically comes true. As he lands a job at a toy company and navigates the adult world, Josh discovers that growing up isn’t all it’s cracked up to be. Directed by Penny Marshall, this nostalgic comedy is filled with laughter, heart, and timeless charm.

Now in its 11th year, Movies Under the Pines transforms Pioneer Park into a state-of-the-art outdoor movie theater. Bring your blankets and low-back chairs and settle in for a truly special summer evening. Movies Under the Pines is proudly supported by the City of Nevada City.
Beer, wine, popcorn, soft drinks, and water will be available for purchase. Outside food and non-alcoholic beverages are welcome; outside alcohol is not permitted.
This event also marks the kick-off to the 25th Annual Nevada City Film Festival, happening June 20–22. The award-winning festival brings together filmmakers and movie lovers from around the world for three days of screenings, Q&As, kids programming, workshops, parties, and more.
