On Wednesday, August 5, three hundred film goers who support democracy and the power of history attended “And Then They Came for Us,” a documentary event produced by the Community Asian Theatre of the Sierra (CATS) with support from The Onyx Downtown at the Nevada Theatre.
With CATS’ mission to promote Asian arts, culture, and history, this film was timely as it spoke to America’s current humanitarian crises affecting immigrants and people of color.
Our distinguished panel helped us dissect a segment of America’s past in further understanding the Japanese Incarceration during WWII, on its similar undertones in America cities today, and offered us hope for the future. Remembrance and Action was the theme. To all who attended the screening and event, thank you for embracing democracy and freedom.
Thank you to our taiko drummers, David Yonenaka and Rebecca Duff, who opened the program with thunderous energy, stirring our souls to take action! And, lastly, much gratitude to our panelists, Gordon Sakaue, Louise Sakamoto Chan, Jeff Ogata, and David Yonenaka, who shared intimate family stories, as survivors and descendants of the Japanese Incarceration.
