NEVADA CITY, Calif. February 17, 2017 – As we celebrate the third birthday of the Nevada City Police K9 Officer, we are pleased to announce the formation of the Rüdiger Foundation. Formerly the Western Nevada County K9 Association (WNCK9A), the Rüdiger Foundation’s mission is to provide local law enforcement with K9 resources that demonstrate and enhance an appreciated, supportive work environment, encourage
constituency education and connectivity, and foster a safer, healthier community.
Nevada City Police Department acquired Rüdiger through the generosity of private donors, becoming the first 100% community-funded K9 Officer we are aware of in America. His initial cost of $71,000 included approximately $10,000 from the Sean M. Walsh Foundation to purchase the dog, and $61,000 in contributions from anonymous donors. These initial monies purchased Rüdiger’s specially equipped vehicle and provided equipment, initial training, and related expenses for the first year. The Sean M. Walsh Foundation offered to provide fiscal sponsorship for the Western Nevada County K9 Association until such time that the WNCK9A could obtain 501c3 not-for-profit status.
The WNCK9A chose to incorporate as the Rüdiger Foundation to honor, in perpetuity, their first K9 Officer who has paved the way for additional resources to provide additional K9 Officers within our community.
Rüdiger Foundation intends to continue to provide all necessary funding to cover the estimated $25,000 per year expense of maintaining the Nevada City Police Department K9 Program. In addition, the Rüdiger Foundation hopes to provide additional dogs, with the ultimate goal of assuring 24/7 K9 Officer coverage in western Nevada County.
