As the Community Asian Theatre of the Sierra (CATS) enters its 32nd year, its April/May 2026 production at the Nevada Theatre is Rashomon, by Michael Kanin and Fay Kanin and directed by Sonny Alforque.

CATS last produced this show in 2000.  It’s time to bring back this classic tale of human perception and greed to a new generation!

Rashomon was an Akira Kurosawa film in 1950 and has been hailed as one of his finest. This play’s Broadway premier in 1959 (starring Rod Steiger and Claire Bloom) received rave reviews and was nominated for three Tony awards. Rashomon is based on stories by Ryunosuke Akutagawa and explores the notions of truth and justice.

Sonny Alforque will make his directorial debut for CATS.  Sonny had been in three shows for CATS: The Joy Luck Club (2022), The Great Leap (2023), and Where the Mountain Meets the Moon (2025).  A seasoned director from Sacramento, we are excited about his vision and his commitment to authenticity of 12th century Japan.
