On October 14th, volunteers Volunteers David Rosen and Emma Cox from local organization Gold Country Avian Studies introduced students from Cynthia Grapel’s 4th grade class at Grass Valley Charter School to birds wintering and migrating through Empire Mine State Historic Park, along the South Fork of Wolf Creek.

To better understand changes in local bird populations and inform bird conservation efforts, GCAS operates a research station in the park where birds are captured, identified, banded with a uniquely-numbered federal band, measured, and safely released. Photographer Penny P. Collins joined the class to bring you these pictures.
