Nevada City, CA – Nevada County animal lovers will have multiple opportunities to meet adoptable pets and welcome a new furry family member during California Adopt-a-Pet Day on Saturday, June 6.

All fees will be waived for those who adopt a pet from the Nevada County Animal Shelter that day. That includes the adoption fee, rabies vaccination, microchipping and licensing for Nevada County residents. All adoptable pets are spayed or neutered and are current on flea, tick and heartworm prevention.
The adoptions are sponsored by the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (ASPCA). The goal is to find loving forever homes for dogs and cats.
Adoptable pets can be found on Sammie’s Friend website at sammiesfriends.org/adopt.
Community members can also meet adoptable animals and learn about adoption opportunities at three locations throughout the day:
- BriarPatch Food Co-op — 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. 290 Sierra College Drive, Grass Valley. Sammie’s Friends will attend.
- Nevada County Animal Shelter — Noon to 4:30 p.m. 14647 McCourtney Road, Grass Valley.
- Grass Valley Library – Summer Learning Kickoff — 1 to 3 p.m. with volunteers from Sammie’s Friends. 207 Mill St.
“Help us clear the shelter and find loving forever homes for dogs, cats and kittens,” said Lorie Hennessey, Nevada County Animal Shelter administrative services officer.
About the Nevada County Animal Shelter

Nevada County’s Animal Shelter is operated in partnership with Sammie’s Friends, the County’s long-standing partner, serving animals from the unincorporated areas of the county. The County conducts day-to-day shelter operations while Sammie’s Friends supports adoptions, volunteer coordination, foster care and medical cost assistance. The Nevada County Sheriff’s Office Animal Control Division provides animal control services, such as responding to stray or nuisance animal complaints, investigating bites and quarantines, enforcing licensing and vaccination laws, and promoting responsible pet ownership.
The shelter takes in more than 1,900 animals annually, including dogs, puppies, cats, kittens, rabbits and livestock. Find your next companion at sammiesfriends.org/adopt. The shelter is located at 14647 McCourtney Road, Grass Valley and open Wednesday – Saturday from noon – 5 p.m.
