Nevada City Calif. – The candidate filing period has been extended for 16 local contests in the Nov. 3, 2026 General Election because the incumbents did not file for re-election by today (Aug. 7).
Under state law, when an eligible incumbent does not file by the close of the nomination period, any qualified person other than the incumbent has five more calendar days to file candidacy documents. The extended deadline to file is 5 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 12.
The following offices have an extended filing period (offices with asterisks cross county lines and are still being vetted).
City Councils
- Grass Valley City Council (two seats, at large)
- Truckee Town Council (three seats, at large)
School Districts
- Grass Valley School District (three seats, at large)
- Nevada City School District (three seats, at large)
- Nevada County Board of Education (Trustee Area 2, at large)
- Nevada Joint Union High School District (Trustee Area 5)
- Penn Valley Union Elementary School District (three seats, at large)
- Sierra Joint Community College District (Trustee Area 2) *
- Twin Ridges School District (3 seats, at large)
Fire Protection Districts
- North San Juan Fire Protection District (3 seats, at large)
- Peardale Chicago Fire Protection District (3 seats, at large)
- Truckee Fire Protection District (3 seats, at large) *
Other Districts
- Donner Summit Public Utility District (two seats, at large) *
- Nevada Irrigation District (Division 1)
- Truckee Tahoe Airport District (2 seats, at large) *

Most candidates should file candidacy documents with the Nevada County Elections Office in Nevada City. Candidates running for city or town councils should file with their city or town clerk. Candidates for Truckee districts can file with the Town of Truckee clerk.
