September 23, 2016 – Join First Lady Jacqueline Kennedy, screen legend Marilyn Monroe, author/politician/ambassador Clare Booth Luce, and other remarkable women of the 1950s at All About Unique Women – the 50s: Cold War to Camelot on Sunday, October 9th. It is the American Association of University Women’s (AAUW) fifth annual All About Unique Women scholarship fundraiser. This year’s event recognizes the 50’s Cold War era up to the early 60s years of the Kennedy administration with a vintage fashion show, produced by Cherie Oliver of Yesteryear Sierra. Interactive displays, period vehicles, music and other entertainment also will be served up.
Think rock ‘n’ roll, bobby sox and poodle skirts. The fads of the day, like hula hoops, will be on display, and guests will have the chance to give them a whirl. After all what would a 1950s celebration be without a hula hoop contest? Or a photo with Elvis or Marilyn to add to the scrapbook? Plus the air will be filled with period tunes, including songs from the Broadway and film classic “West Side Story”, performed by talented local songstress Lyra Dominguez.
“Be ready to ‘shake, rattle, and roll’ as we celebrate women and their unique contributions in the 50’s,” says AAUW Nevada County Branch President Laurie Alire. “Attendees can experience the era through a lively history and fashion lesson, a dip into the culture of the era by posing for photos with Elvis, twirling a hula hoop, and exploring collectibles from the time. Everyone is invited to dress the part or come as they are to this fabulous fundraiser for our scholarship programs in Nevada County.”
In addition to the fashion show and entertainment, the afternoon event will feature period vehicles and cultural displays as well as a silent auction with His and Hers Dream Day packages and original artwork among the tempting offerings. Admission includes tastings of award-winning Chacewater wines. A tasty trend of the times, Tex Mex food will be available for purchase from Horn of the Bull Taqueria.
