All local attention has been recently focused on tree removal and the widening of Highway 49. CalTrans Project Manager Sam Vardell and Engineer Jeff Johnson along with Mike Woodman, Executive Director of the Nevada County Transportation Commission, are the invited guests at this month’s free Community Forum to be held on Friday, May 1st from 10:30-11:30 a.m.. This live, one-hour discussion will be held at the Sierra College-Nevada County Campus in the auditorium of Building N-12.

“Certainly we’ll be talking about the tree removal which has occurred south of Grass Valley,” said retired Nevada County Superintendent of Schools Terry McAteer who will moderate the discussion.
McAteer also noted that besides the Highway 49 project participants will discuss the proposed Grass Valley and Nevada City roundabouts which are designed to ease the flow of traffic and improve safety at specific intersections. “I expect some lively interaction with those attending who have some questions about Hwy 49 and roundabouts,” said McAteer.
Sponsored by the Sierra College-Nevada County Campus Foundation, the Community Forum hosts hour-long, in-depth informational events nine times each year, presenting local issues and topics of interest to both our community and neighboring counties. The moderator of each session reserves time for guests in the audience to pose questions directly to the guest speaker. The May Forum is the final Forum for the 2025-26 academic year.
“This May Forum concludes our Forums for our 3rd year of operation,” said Sierra College Executive Dean Karen O’Hara and “the new nine monthly Forum series will restart on Friday, August 21st.”
Each of these speaker series is free and open to the public. Free parking is provided on campus and directional signs direct guests where to park and how to access the Building N-12 auditorium.
