Nevada City, CA – In recognition of National Public Safety Telecommunications Week and National Animal Control Officer Appreciation Week, both occurring April 14 -20, the Nevada County Sheriff’s Office (NCSO) is inviting the community to send in their words of thanks to 911 dispatchers and/or animal control officers. Examples include thank you cards; children’s drawings; and letters or emails sharing personal accounts of how a dispatcher or animal control officer made a difference.

NCSO proudly operates both the Nevada County Regional Dispatch Center, which handles the majority of 911 and non-emergency calls in Nevada County, and the Nevada County Animal Control Division, which responds to domesticated animal-related calls, such as noise nuisances, maltreatment claims and animal rescues in unincorporated Nevada County.

National Public Safety Telecommunications Week

National Public Safety Telecommunications Week is a week dedicated to honoring and appreciating all 911 dispatchers. 911 dispatchers serve all of Nevada County and dispatch calls for Grass Valley Police Department, Nevada City Police Department and Truckee Police Department, in addition to the Sheriff’s Office and Nevada County Probation. Each agency is personally planning a themed day of recognition for dispatchers during National Public Safety Telecommunications Week and will be surprising dispatchers with coffee and donut mornings, gourmet sandwich lunches, taco bar and nacho dinners, and more.

“Our 911 dispatchers facilitated nearly 150,000 calls last year,” said Sheriff Shannan Moon. “Recognizing the vital role they play every day in the community and in the lives of others is something we will not soon forget.”

“Our dispatchers are often unrecognized first responders for our community,” added Grass Valley Police Department Chief of Police Alex Gammelgard. “At times they provide the most difficult part of the police response and frequently don’t get the closure or recognition they deserve. This week reminds us, and provides a great opportunity to recognize their work in an often-thankless job and we are grateful for their service to our department and community.”

National Animal Control Officer Appreciation Week

National Animal Control Officer Appreciation Week is a week dedicated to animal control education and gratitude for those who serve and protect animals. NCSO animal control officers respond to thousands of calls every year to protect animals from improper use, abuse, neglect and inhumane treatment while protecting citizens from annoyance, intimidation, injury and property damage by animals.

“Like dispatchers, animal control officers have a tough job that is often overlooked,” said Sheriff Moon. “They do so much more than just respond to animal call complaints. When faced in emergency situations and fire evacuations, it’s our animal control officers and their HEART volunteer team rescuing animals and bringing them to safety.”

To ensure gratitude notes and cards are received timely for 911 dispatchers and animal control officers, the community is encouraged to submit their notes of support on or before April 10, 2024.

Send gratitude notes by mail: Thank you letters, cards, drawings to 911 dispatchers or animal control officers may be mailed to the Nevada County Sheriff’s Office at 950 Maidu Avenue, Suite 280, Nevada City, CA 95959.
