NEVADA CITY, CA – May 15 is annually observed as National Peace Officers Memorial Day—a day to honor deputies and police officers who lost their lives in the line of duty. To pay tribute to the 12 California peace officers who died in 2025 and to recognize a loss from the distant past, Sheriff Shannan Moon is hosting a Peace Officers Memorial Day Ceremony outside the Nevada County Sheriff’s Office (NCSO) on Friday, May 15 at 8 a.m. The community is invited to attend the ceremony in person (950 Maidu Avenue, Nevada City, CA 95959) or watch the live recording from the NCSO Facebook page.

“This day holds profound significance for our law enforcement families and community,” said Sheriff Shannan Moon. “It is not just a day of remembrance and sacrifice, but a recognition of the risks carried daily by peace officers across the country. Behind every uniform is a person committed to service, and their sacrifice is neither forgotten, nor taken lightly.”
