CASAs are community volunteers who work to better the lives of children in hard circumstances. When the court determines that a child is the victim of parental abuse and/or neglect, the judge appoints a CASA for the child. The CASAโ€™s role is to focus on the child or sibling group, get to know the child and the situation through frequent visits, understand the childโ€™s needs and wishes, and for the duration of the court case, advocate in the court and the community for what is in that childโ€™s best interest.

As part of his or her role, a CASA provides information to the court through a court report which can assist the judge in making critical decisions about the childโ€™s future. A CASA also functions as a support person for the child.

CASAs can also work with older youth who are on probation and who need a positive adult who can help them onto a more positive track. Another opportunity for CASAs to work with youth is in the One 2 One Youth Mentoring program. This growing program is for middle school-age, teenagers, and even young adults who are not in the court system but who are in need of additional support and who have been referred to the One 2 One program by community partners. After completing CASA training, a One 2 One mentor will spend time with an assigned youth, identify needs, facilitate resources, and help guide the youth towards a hopeful future without the requirements of attendance at court hearings and court reports.

The CASA program is administered by Child Advocates of Nevada County. Each CASA volunteer is screened, trained, and fully supported. When assigned to a child or youth, each CASA works with a case manager who guides and assists the CASA throughout the process.

After acceptance to the program, CASAs undergo a thorough background check and attend a 35-hour training to prepare for their assignment. A CASA can expect to stay involved in his/her assigned childโ€™s life and court case for 12-18 months or longer. CASAs who serve as One 2 One mentors commit to 6-months with the option to continue the mentoring relationship if the youth and family agree.
