Nevada City, Calif.— Nevada County will give away compost Saturday, May 2 between 9 a.m. – 2 p.m. on a first-come, first-served basis at the Nevada County Government Center, 950 Maidu Ave., Nevada City.
Adding compost to your garden has many benefits. It helps plants grow stronger, increases roots’ depth, and helps retain moisture in the soil, reducing the need for watering.

The compost comes from the facility that processes food waste and yard waste from Nevada County residents. So, your morning’s eggshells and coffee grounds could be a part of the same compost you take home for your tomato garden.
Compost event attendees are advised bring their own shovels and buckets. The compost will be given away in small quantities. No truckloads or trailer loads will be allowed, and the event is for residential, not commercial, use.
This giveaway is funded by a CalRecycle grant aimed at educating the public about the benefits of recycling organic waste.
