Nevada City, Calif. – With flu season kicking off, Nevada County Public Health is hosting free community flu vaccine clinics in October to make it easy for residents to get protected. Vaccines are free, no insurance is needed, and clinics serve ages 3 and up.

“Too often, people underestimate influenza,” said Dr. Brian Evans, Nevada County Health Officer. “Last season, flu led to substantial hospitalizations and deaths across California, reminding us that this virus can be serious, especially for those at higher risk. A flu vaccine cannot give you the flu, but it can help prevent severe illness and reduce the likelihood of needing hospital care. Choosing vaccination is one of the simplest steps you can take to protect yourself and your family this fall and winter.”

Each year, flu causes up to 41 million illnesses nationwide. October is a good time to get vaccinated before flu activity typically increases and the holiday season begins.

Know before you go

  • Wear short sleeves if you can to make vaccination easier.
  • Bring a mask if you prefer one.
  • If you are sick on clinic day, choose another clinic date.

Everyone 6 months and older is recommended to get a flu vaccine each year. Parents of children under 3 should contact their primary care provider about vaccination options.

If you care for an infant, older adult, or anyone with a chronic condition, vaccination can also help protect them too.
