Nevada County, CA—The first of two free residential green waste disposal events for Nevada County residents kicks off this Friday, May 21. Residents will have an opportunity to drop off their green waste at no cost to them, Friday, May 21 through Monday, May 24, from 7:00 am -3:00 pm. Residents may access the site, 12625 Brunswick Rd, Grass Valley, from East Bennett and Millsite Roads. Volunteers will be on-site to help with traffic flow and check-in. Fire Safe Council of Nevada County (Fire Safe Council) staff will also be available to help residents unload their vehicles.
“We know free is always appreciated. These past few years, we have seen an uptick in resident participation. We expect even more to take advantage of it this spring especially due to the economic impacts of COVID,” says Jamie Jones Executive Director of the Fire Safe Council. Every year homeowners are encouraged to create and maintain defensible space. Building a buffer between a structure and the grasses, trees, and shrubs that surround is essential to slowing or stopping a wildfire. Defensible space helps protect homes while providing greater safety for firefighters who may need to take a stand to defend property.
With 5 of the state’s 10 largest wildfires having burned in 2020, the trend seems to indicate that fires will be more intense and destructive in years to come. Unseasonably warm weather, low fuel moisture, and drought conditions early in the season have climate and fire professionals alike sounding the alarm that this fire season is likely to be severe.
“Judging by current conditions, we expect this fire season is going to be challenging. It is critical that we work together at all levels, as community members and agencies alike, to do our part to reduce fire fuels in Nevada County. To make this happen, we will need all hands on deck. We hope folks take full advantage of this year’s free programming.,” says Paul Cummings, Program Manager of the County of Nevada Office of Emergency Services.
In Western Nevada County, the Free Residential Green Waste Disposal Program is a partnership between the County of Nevada, Fire Safe Council, and the Northern Sierra Air Quality Management District.
