On Saturday, United Way of Nevada County and Nevada County Office of Emergency Services teamed up to host a Go Bag Party at the Grass Valley Vets Hall. Residents were able to refresh their Go-Bag with hand crank radios, evacuation tags, first aid kits, USB rechargeable flashlights, mylar blankets, zone magnets and more.
“We’re excited by the success of our first Go-Bag party. We handed out 200 go-bags and first aid kits for pets and people and another 100 solar chargers and hand crank radios,” said Nevada County Office of Emergency Services Senior Analyst Alex Keeble-Toll. “More importantly, we got to connect with over 800 people who attended the event with their friends, family and neighbors to talk about fire season preparedness.”
“It takes the whole community to be prepared, from individuals and Firewise communities to local non-profits and government agencies,” added Keeble-Toll. “Stay tuned for Nevada County’s Ready, Set, Go! Handbook in your mailbox later this month. This guide will walk you through creating an emergency plan with checklists and resources.”
Community Risk Reduction and Outreach Officer Evan McLenithan represented Nevada City at the event. “County OES and United Way did a fantastic job at Saturday’s Go Bag Party. It was exciting to see the public engaged, asking questions, and getting prepared for Wildfire! It was really a one stop shop for resources and information about disaster preparedness. Nevada City is looking forward to future events and collaboration with the partners that were at the event,” he said.
