Grass Valley, CA — May 4, 2026 — The Grass Valley community is recognizing the efforts of a dedicated local youth who stepped forward to preserve an important piece of the City’s history.

In February 2026, a World War I monument in Grass Valley’s Memorial Park, honoring members of the Grass Valley District who gave their lives in service to the nation, was vandalized with graffiti, leaving the historic monument defaced and in need of restoration.

Motivated to make a meaningful impact, Oscar Thomas, a Boy Scout from Troop 24, selected the restoration of the memorial as his Eagle Scout Project. On Saturday, May 2, Oscar, alongside his fellow scouts from Troop 24, volunteered their time and effort to fully repaint and restore the memorial to its original condition.

The project not only revitalized a cherished local landmark but also demonstrated a deep respect for the sacrifices of those who served. Through leadership, initiative, and community service, Oscar’s work reflects the highest values of scouting and civic responsibility.
