Grass Valley-Nevada City Cultural District – July 15, 2025. Nevada County Arts Council is excited to announce the launch of the GVNC Cultural District Mini-Grant Program, providing funding for small-scale community-centered projects and initiatives led by Individual Artists and Culture Bearers, Arts Organizations, and Arts Collaboratives that align with the Cultural District’s mission, and contribute to its vibrancy.
Funding for the Mini-Grant program is provided by Nevada County Arts Council as administering partner for the Grass Valley-Nevada City Cultural District, in partnership with the City of Grass Valley, the City of Nevada City, Nevada City Chamber, Greater Grass Valley Chamber of Commerce, and the Grass Valley Downtown Association. A total of $30,000 will be awarded, with grants available in two categories – Individual Artists and Culture Bearers, and Arts Organizations/Collaboratives. Artists of all disciplines are welcome to apply, including but not limited to: Visual Arts, Crafts, Literary Arts, Performing Arts (Dance, Theatre, Music, etc.), Media Arts, Traditional and Folk Arts, and Social Practice and Community-based Arts.
Says Diana Arbex at Nevada County Arts Council: “As the new Program Manager for the Grass Valley-Nevada City Cultural District, I couldn’t be more thrilled to support the launch of a new initiative investing in our creative economy. Mirroring the work of our partners at Truckee Cultural District, a new mini-grant program for Western Nevada County will create opportunities to further fuel our sector and elevate the work of our unique artists and cultural practitioners.”
Eligibility Requirements: Priority will be given to applicants who demonstrate meaningful community engagement, and align with the GVNC Cultural District’s mission to grow and sustain authentic arts and culture in Nevada County; to increase visibility of and support for local
artists; to strengthen the creative economy by promoting socio-economic and cultural diversity; and to increase community participation in, and valuation for, local arts and culture.
The Grass Valley-Nevada City Cultural District has chosen a lottery model as part of its selection process. Traditional grant-making often favors professionally written applications, unintentionally excluding emerging artists, grassroots leaders, and historically underrepresented communities. Arbex explains: “Our aim is to broaden access to funding, diversify the types of projects supported, and reduce bias and administrative burden in the evaluation process.”
Eligible applications—screened through a simple, accessible questionnaire—will be entered into the lottery, ensuring all qualified applicants have an equal chance. This approach recognizes the reality of limited funding amid an abundance of creative talent, and reflects a commitment to distributing resources more fairly across the local cultural landscape.
Applications are due Monday, August 11, 2025 with Award Notifications to be sent out in the early fall. Nevada County Arts Council will also be providing technical assistance and mentoring throughout the application window via weekly online checkins / office hours.
