GRASS VALLEY, Calif. January 25, 2017 – According to the latest update by CHP Grass Valley, “There is a depression in the slow lane of the freeway, on SR-49 southbound between McKnight Way and Empire St., adjacent to the large sinkhole on Freeman Lane in Grass Valley. Caltrans has been monitoring the area since last week and was on-site much of today. Unfortunately, the depression has grown noticeably in the past few days.

Caltrans has had engineers on-site taking survey measurements and inspecting the culvert that crosses the freeway at this location. Because the depression has grown, they have coned-off the right shoulder through the area and will be taking additional measurements in the morning.

#UPDATE 01-25-2017 @ 8:45 AM:
As of last night, the depression in the roadway has increased into the fast lane. Caltrans engineers and CHP personnel were on-site overnight to investigate. This morning, additional construction crews will be brought in for emergency drilling and further investigation underground to determine the extent of the damage under the freeway. The slow lane will be closed during this operation, so expect delays. More information will be coming as we have it. Please drive slowly through the area.”
