March 29, 2019 – The Kick-off event begins Know Your Watershed month, a month-long collaborative celebration of the Yuba/Deer, Bear/Wolf, and American River Watersheds. The Kick-off event will feature a Nisenan Blessing and several family-friendly outdoor activities and hikes and music from 10am-4pm on March 31st at the Bear River Campground Day Use Area and is free to the public.
Following the Kick-off will be the Bear River Awakening, an evening of Bear River films and presentations, with pizza and non-alcoholic refreshments, at the Sierra Vista Community Center in Colfax between 4:30-8pm on March 31st and is free to the public. Details and schedule can be found under events at www.knowyourwatershed.org. Over 30 organizations will be hosting other watershed events throughout the month of April.
The kick-off will feature: a blessing of the river by Clyde Prout of the local Colfax- Todd’s Valley Nisenan Consolidated Tribe, a bio-blitz led by Rick Ramos with several local experts in plants, birds, and other animal types; Enviro-Fair featuring dozens of environmental non-profits from all four watersheds sharing information about watershed issues; the Neena McNair Family Singers will be praying and singing with the Mother Drum; Gold Country Fly Fishers will have a hands on aquatic bug tank and identification for kids and adults along with practice fly rods and casting instruction; guided hikes by our experts Richard Marks and Kristen Hein Strohm as you hike the Bear River campground trail network; music by Riparia and more!
Marvel at plants and animals as you embark on a bio-blitz around the campground. Local plant, bug, bird, and animal experts will teach you all about the curious creatures of the area while you learn how to observations with iNaturalist. Engage with local leaders of watershed stewardship during the Enviro-Fair. Pack yourself a picnic lunch, invite your friends and family, and come down to the campground for a day of river celebration with your community.
After you’ve enjoyed a remarkable day at the river, join us at the Sierra Vista Community Center for the Bear River Awakening. During the Bear River Awakening, you’ll enjoy pizza as you learn all about stewardship of the Bear through presentations and film.
