Lon Peterson

Nevada City, Calif. — On Oct. 21, 2024, Lon Peterson, a seasoned local government leader with over two decades of local government experience, was appointed as the new Assistant City Manager for Nevada City. Chosen from a highly competitive pool of candidates, Peterson brings expertise in leadership, strategic communications, community engagement and innovation. His track record of success in leading teams and initiatives will play a pivotal role in advancing Nevada City Council’s goals to enhance services and community engagement.

“We are excited to welcome Lon to our organization,” said City Manager Sean Grayson. “His diverse expertise, including executive leadership in strategic communication, community outreach, and technology, makes him the ideal person to continue to elevate the standard of exceptional services we provide, driving further innovation and improvement of city operations.”

Previously, Lon served as the Chief Communications and Intergovernmental Officer for the City of Santa Rosa. As a member of the City’s Executive Team, he was instrumental in driving efforts to elevate communications, engagement, legislation, grants, and diversity, equity, inclusion and belonging initiatives. Lon’s career trajectory includes pivotal roles in prominent California cities and agencies. He has led initiatives, projects, and teams for the cities of Santa Clara, Palo Alto, Sacramento, Roseville and the Marin Water District. His extensive experience includes more than a decade in the City Manager’s Office in Roseville, where he directed award-winning e-government and communication, significantly enhancing online services and engagement.

Peterson earned a Bachelor of Science in Information Management from the University of San Francisco and an Associate of Science in Graphic Communication from Sacramento City College.
