Peace Lutheran Church and other local churches are joining Bethel AME Church of Marysville from 5 to 8 p.m. Saturday, March 26, for dinner and a movie. Showing will be “The Black Church, Part 2,” an original PBS special produced by the renowned Henry Louis Gates, Jr.

PBS Program: The Black Church

The event will be held at the Five 30 Event Center at 1104 J St. in Marysville. Buy tickets in advance for $35 by calling (530) 763-2339, or using Venmo: LOFT1, or by contacting bhedc1@gmail.com.

Peace Lutheran Church is promoting this event as an outreach of its Conversation on Race group, which has helped to establish a relationship with Bethel African Methodist Epsicopal, a historic Black Church founded in Marysville in 1854.

Bethel is sponsoring the event through its LOFT Institute, Lifting Others Forward Together. Bethel also is home to the choir that visits Grass Valley/Nevada City each year on Martin Luther King Jr. Day to celebrate with a moving gospel concert.

The AME denomination was founded in 1794 in Philadelphia, Penn. It was the first Black denomination in America born out of protest to slavery and discrimination. (https://www.ame-church.com/our-church/our-history).
